Get Started with Wing Foiling

Your First Wingfoil Gear

Wingfoiling is one of the most exciting and liberating water sports right now. But getting off to the right start is crucial. Your gear affects how quickly you learn, how confident you feel, and how far you can take the sport.

We work exclusively with established premium brands—primarily Armstrong, Axis, Neil Pryde, and Naish—and that’s no coincidence. Having the right gear from the start helps you learn faster, avoids the need to upgrade too soon, and allows you to upgrade wisely as you go. It pays off in the long run.

What does a wingfoil setup consist of?

A complete setup consists of:

  • Wing
  • Board
  • Foil (mast, front wing, rear wing, fuselage)
  • Leash for the wing and board
  • Pump and safety equipment

Below, we’ll go over each part and what you should keep in mind.

The wing—the engine

Size

The choice of size depends on your weight, wind strength, and where you’re riding.

General guidelines for beginners:

  • 50–75 kg: 4.0–5.5 m²
  • 75–90 kg: approximately 5.0–6.0 m²
  • 90+ kg: 6.0 m²–6.5 m²

Many people start with an all-around wing around 5 m² and later add more sizes to their collection.

Materials and Quality

This is where premium products differ from budget options. A good wing should have:

  • A stiff leading edge (LE) made of high-quality Dacron or equivalent material
  • A durable canopy (such as Teijin fabric or equivalent)
  • A stable construction that holds its shape in gusty winds
  • Ergonomic handles or a bar with good stiffness

A cheap wing often feels soft, loses power, and doesn’t hold up as well over time. A premium wing offers better control, a wider range of performance, a longer lifespan, and a higher resale value.

The board—your platform

Volume—most important for beginners

A simple rule of thumb is: your body weight + 20–40 liters.

Example: If you weigh 80 kg, you should start with about 100–120 liters.

More volume provides a more stable launch and faster learning. Too little volume often leads to frustration and unnecessarily slow progress.

Construction

A high-quality board should have:

  • Reinforced foil boxes
  • Rigid sandwich construction
  • Low weight relative to durability
  • A well-designed shape that helps you get up on plane.

A good first board is one you can grow into. Once you’ve mastered the technique, you can upgrade to a smaller, more performance-oriented model.

The foil—what lifts you

The foil affects how early you lift off, how stable the ride feels, and how easy it is to control the board.

For beginners, we recommend:

  • Large front wing (approx. 1,500–2,000 cm²)
  • Mast around 75–85 cm
  • A stable rear wing designed for control

Material

  • Aluminum—affordable, durable, and easy to handle
  • Carbon fiber – lighter, stiffer, and higher performance

An established foil platform is important. If you buy the right brand from the start, you can swap out the front wing, upgrade the mast, and develop your setup without having to replace the entire system. This is where it really pays off to invest wisely from the beginning. At Surfers, we work closely with the major brands that are at the forefront of development. With our foils, you can feel confident that you have the right gear for your progress. Yes, our foils cost a little more than the cheaper “Chinese packages,” but in the long run, they’ll be more cost-effective, and we can promise they’ll be significantly easier and more fun.

Why choose the “right brand” from the start?

We work exclusively with major, established brands. This provides peace of mind and long-term reliability.

The benefits are clear:

  • Proven designs
  • Access to replacement parts
  • High resale value
  • Ability to upgrade within the same system
  • Long service life

Cheap, no-name solutions often end up being expensive in the long run. Poorer performance makes them harder to learn, and the equipment is difficult to resell. Buying the right equipment from the start allows you to build your setup step by step instead of having to start over.
